Les événements politiques majeurs des 8 années de présidence de Mohammad Khatami font l’objet d’une analyse, permettant de comprendre la complexité de la situation politique iranienne. Le film interroge : Un état islamique peut-il garantir la démocratie ?
En 1997, Mohammad Khatami est élu président de la République islamique d’Iran. Il se présente comme un réformateur et un modéré. Les Iraniens s’engagent dans un combat difficile pour la conquête de leurs droits. Les partisans de Khatami expriment leur espoir de créer quelques espaces de liberté.
Le film examine les positions de Khatami durant ses deux mandats face aux aspirations de la population. Deux personnages politiques en faveur de la doctrine réformatrice de Khatami parlent de leur déception. Ils évoquent près d’un siècle de pouvoir autoritaire dans le pays a empêché l’émergence d’une pratique politique démocratique au sein de la société iranienne.

J. Golmakani est journaliste-réalisateur d’origine iranienne. En 1977 il commence sa carrière comme rédacteur-photographe à Téhéran. En 1982 il se trouve en France. En 1989 il obtient un Doctorat en cinéma-télévision à la Sorbonne. Sa recherche sur L’image de l’Iran à la télévision française est publiée aux Editions L’Harmattan, préfacé par Marc Ferro.

Iran, the Dream of a Democracy
This film reviews why and how the dream of democracy in Iran remains just that, a dream. By studying the major political events during the eight years presidency of Mohammad Khatami, the film reveals the current climate of Iranian political system. It questions the compatibility of an Islamic State with freedom and democracy. In 1997, Mohammad Khatami, ran as a moderate for reform. His constituents’ goal and hope was to create some measures of freedom. The film examines Khatami’s position during his two terms in office regarding democratic aspiration of people. It contains interviews with two of Khatami’s Reform Doctrine ex-supporters speaking of their deceptions. They identify the lack of democratic practices in the society as culpable.
J. Golmakani is an Iranian-French filmmaker, author and journalist. In 1977 he began his career as a photojournalist in Tehran-Iran. In 1982 he immigrated to France where he studied and received a Doctorate in Cinema and Television from Sorbonne University. He is the author of Image of Iran on French Television. Golmakani has produced and directed many documentary films for French television as well as many other television companies outside of France.
